Bride and groom’s vision brought to life in their wedding suite
Freelance project, 2024
Clients’ wishlist:
Light blue, light grey, and navy for the color scheme
Simplicity with Baby’s breath details
Easy to read, cursive accents
THE FRAMEWORK FOR THE CREATIVE DECISIONS
In our first meeting, we went through what the work will include: first, the wedding invites, followed by the rest of the wedding suite (welcome poster, seating chart, name cards, menu, and schedule).
We talked through what information they wanted to include in the wedding invitations, which helped me determine the best card layout. The size was chosen to be A6, making it easy to send in standard envelopes. The cards are traditionally vertical, which I picked based on the amount of information. Vertically, the text is easier to read, and the layout flows better. The invitation and details are on a double-sided card, as are the menu and schedule.
The visual theme for the wedding suite was inspired by their wedding decor, which was very classic and simplistic, with lots of Baby’s breath. I was able to get a good sense of their vision from their wedding inspiration Pinterest board, which they kindly sent to me.
Since the wedding flower was Baby’s breath, I included it as an illustration in the designs. On the invitations, the flower on the front will serve as a little sneak peek for the guests of what’s to come on the big day. The menu, schedule, and name cards are kept simple without any additional illustrations, because they were planned to be placed on the table with large amounts of Baby’s breath decorations already.
The color scheme was based on light blue, grey, and navy. I combined light blue and grey, adding navy for contrast. The typography concept aimed for something simple and easy to read, with cursive accents that weren’t too “over the top.” I chose a handwritten cursive font for a more natural look that’s still easy to read. The couple’s names on the invites feature a different cursive style for some variation, but it wouldn’t have worked as well for longer text in terms of readability. I made sure the two cursive fonts were cohesive with a similar enough style.
THE PROCESS
After our meeting, I designed a few initial invite options for the couple to review. These included variations in layout, illustration, and typography. They gave feedback on what direction they preferred and wanted to keep it as simple as possible. I refined the designs accordingly and sent over a more polished round of options for their review. Once everything was finalized, I made the final tweaks and sent the invites for a last review—after an OK, off to print they went!
We chose an amazing Helsinki based print house, AM Digipaino, for their fast delivery, as we had a tight schedule. I visited in person to select the most suitable paper for the designs. The clients entrusted me with choosing the paper, specifying they wished for something with a bit of texture. We reviewed the paper options at AM Digipaino, where I compared the texture and color to ensure the paper wouldn’t affect the blue tones on the invites. Although the clients couldn’t see the paper in person, I was confident in my choice, and they were thrilled with the final result. The clients then chose to place the invitation order and handle the distribution themselves.
A month later, we began working on the rest of the wedding suite. I already had a good idea of the design direction from the invites, so I was quickly able to sent a few layout options for the clients to review. The feedback was minimal, and they quickly chose the direction they wanted to proceed with. We initially planned to use the same paper as the invitations, but unfortunately, it was out of stock. We chose a very similar textured paper recommended by AM Digipaino.
Despite the clients’ tight schedule, from early May to early August, and my own freelance work alongside a full-time job, I was able to work quickly without sacrificing quality or communication, ensuring everything was completed on time. The clients were very happy and felt the wedding suite matched their vision.
This was also my first print project. With thorough groundwork about the printing process and file preparation, I was able to make the process smooth for not only myself but also for my clients. Special thanks for AM Digipaino for guiding me with the printing process when needed :)
